I spend my days, Monday through Friday, with at least 26 seven and eight year olds.
Because of this, I learn to find joy and happiness in simple, small things.
To kids, a funny looking piece of eraser can cause giggles for an hour; a crumpled up paper that misses the garbage can can provide eruptions of laughter, and a frog in their teacher's throat can evoke smiles the size of the equator.
To me, I have used these silly occurences to help me learn to appreciate those small and simple things. Granted, I don't always find erasers funny, but I do try to find joy in the things that really can brighten a day. I try to find gratitude in my heart for the little comments, sweet smiles, and naughty (but really funny) choices kids sometimes make.
Today, I feel that sweetness. Today I feel like that song that Raffi sings to my students during journal writing time: "All I really need/is a song in my heart/food in my belly/and love in my family."
Its so true. The simple, basic things are what really provide happiness. I could go live everyday knowing that I have a song in my heart and love in my family and be perfectly happy. If I really focused on those simple things.
I am glad I get to work with kids everyday. They teach me so much about "becoming like a child" and truly experiencing the world for what it is, but more importantly, what it can be.

3 things to make my day worthwhile:
I love your post about school because it is so easy to see your joy and love for teaching. I know how easy it is to get caught up in the negativity and stress and you help me to remember to look for the positive!
As you know, I've spent a few years as a radio DJ... and you would be shocked how many people out there don't know who Raffi is. Sickening. Absolutely sickening. Raffi taught me everything I know.
This is such a good insight... I love it! I like the simple things... I need to find more joy in them. They truly are all around!
